Latex balloons: an alternative, low-cost model for vascular anastomosis training in medical education

Routine Use of Ultrasound Guidance in Femoral Arterial Access for Peripheral Vascular Intervention Decreases Groin Hematoma Rates in High-Volume Surgeons
There is a documented learning curve when adopting ultrasound guidance (UG) to aid vascular access. In the Vascular Study Group of New England (VSGNE), routine UG during percutaneous femoral artery access was shown to protect against the complication of groin hematoma. We sought to confirm this finding in the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI), a dataset with a larger sample size and broader geographic distribution, and evaluate the effects of ultrasound usage and interventionalist volume on hematoma rates following peripheral vascular interventions (PVI).

Partnerships between podiatrists and vascular surgeons in building effective wound care centers
This practice memo, a collaborative effort between the Young Physicians' Program of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Young Surgeons Committee of the Society for Vascular Surgery, is intended to aid podiatrists and vascular surgeons in the early years of their respective careers, especially those involved in the care of patients with chronic wounds. During these formative years, learning how to successfully establish an interprofessional partnership is crucial to provide the best possible care to this important population of patients.

Gender-Based Discrimination Is Prevalent in the Integrated Vascular Trainee Experience and Serves as a Predictor of Burnout
This study sought to characterize the learning environment of vascular residents and to determine how gender-based discrimination and bias (GBDB) affect the clinical experience.

Arteriovenous anastomosis learning curve using low cost simulator
Conclusions It was found that the training model used was effective for increasing learning of this technique. It is believed that future studies with larger samples or a higher number of phases could demonstrate both reduced time and improved quality of the anastomoses performed with statisti cal significance.

The legalization of off-label promotion: Vascular Solutions beat the FDA and what their victory means for medtech
Welcome to the Medsider interview series, a special new feature at MassDevice, which will appear regularly. All interviews are conducted by Scott Nelson, Founder of Medsider. We hope you enjoy them! For as long as I can remember, at every company meeting I’ve ever been to, the topic of off-label promotion is always covered.  Whether it was new-hire orientation, a national sales meeting, or some other large commercial event, the dissemination of off-label information was always presented as not only a fireable offense, but something that could get you thrown in jail.  C.R. Bard, Boston Scientific, Covidien, Medtronic...

Do 'Videos' sections of Internet search engines provide accurate and adequate information about totally implantable venous access ports?
CONCLUSION: Internet search engines' 'Videos' sections have the potential of providing information about totally implantable venous access ports. However, they are vulnerable to providing unreliable information. This study has showed that videos about totally implantable venous access ports are insufficient in terms of reliability and integrity and may mislead patients. The Role of Robotic Surgical System in the Management of Vascular Disease
Conclusions: Minimally invasive techniques using endovascular, laparoscopic, or robot-assisted technology have revolutionized the treatment of aortoiliac, splanchnic, and renal aneurysms and occlusive disease. However, robot-assisted techniques for aortic disease may involve a learning curve and increased operating times. Although endovascular therapy is preferred because of faster recovery, this preference for improved short-term outcomes will be balanced with the superiority and durability of robot-assisted endoscopic methods as comparable to open surgery.

Causes of successful medico-legal claims following amputation.
ConclusionDelays in the diagnosis and or treatment of arterial ischaemia were the commonest reasons for a settled claim. Lessons can be learnt from potentially preventable cases that can be incorporated in medical education and training programs with the aim of reducing both amputation rates and litigation costs. Educational value of Internet videos in vascular access.
CONCLUSION: Medical professionals think that removal is an easier procedure than insertion. They both search more for insertion videos and upload more insertion videos. Insertion practices are similar among different specialties. However, removal practices are more heterogeneous. Individually uploaded catheter videos at YouTube are not reliable educative materials. More free official work should be produced to maintain sufficient qualified online material on social media platforms. PMID: 31084398 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Continue the search for the ideal nonautogenous arterial conduit while we still can
In the current issue of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, we learn of the latest development in arterial conduits in patients without adequate autogenous tissue for revascularization.1 In their article outlining their phase II trial of the human acellular vessel (HAV), Gutowski and his long list of coauthors with senior author Lawson describe their first-in-man experience with this “novel regenerative surgical therapy.”
